SCOPE OF WORK: The project involves the installation of Geovolt®, Enviro Liner® 6040, and HypaFlex® floating cover for the City of San Luis Obispo.
PROJECT PARTNERS: Geomembrane Manufacturer and Installer: Layfield Geosynthetics
PROJECT SUMMARY
In late 2022, the engineering team of the City of San Luis Obispo contacted Layfield for material selection and design for a new floating cover and liner for Reservoir #2 in San Luis Obispo, California. The old liner and floating cover needed replacement due to their age. Reservoir #2 was a concrete reservoir with steep walls and a concrete wall in the middle. To reduce costs without compromising the materials’ performance, endurance, and longevity, the City of San Luis Obispo was interested in exploring alternative materials. Layfield presented the pros and cons of different materials and made a recommendation for the project.
SOLUTION
After evaluating the current conditions of the reservoir, Layfield explored different material options for the liner and cover and recommended the following.
- For the geomembrane, we recommended Geovolt®, which is used for electronic leak detection testing and to protect the liner from the subgrade.
- We recommended Enviro Liner 6040® for the liner. Given the reservoir’s characteristics, this liner is more flexible, and we can make larger prefabricated panels for faster installation.
- For the floating cover, we recommended HypaFlex® 45 mil. This material has the best warranty in the market and a proven track record.
The City of San Luis Obispo accepted Layfield’s recommendations based on endurance, performance, and longevity. The project is currently under construction.
