Ian Thorner

Engineering Business Manager, Calgary
8 Months with Layfield

Q: How long have you been with Layfield, and what do you find most rewarding about your role at Layfield?
I have been with Layfield Geosynthetics for 8 months and have really been enjoying the company and my role. I enjoy being able to help solve problems and to assist with improving designs while also trying to save on project and maintenance costs. Everyday is filled with new challenges and new scenarios.

Q: In what ways has Layfield supported your professional development, and how have you grown since you joined the company?
Layfield actively supports professional development, and I am currently working towards obtaining my Professional Biologist designation.  I have also enjoyed traveling to our supplier headquarters to learn more about their products firsthand.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in our industry?
Jump in the water’s warm! The geosynthetics industry is rewarding, where we try to minimize the environmental impact associated with development and infrastructure while also providing longer-lasting assets.

Q: What unique skills or perspectives to you bring to the role that contributes to the success of your team?
I have a keen interest in problem-solving and efficiency, and my current role provides the perfect platform to apply these skills on a daily basis. With years of experience in Technical Sales, I can collaborate with the customer to achieve better results while being conscious of costs. This desire to do what’s best for the customer seamlessly aligns with Layfield’s values, fostering a company-wide dedication to customer satisfaction.

Q: Outside of your professional life, what are some of your favorite hobbies or activities?
I used to play rugby competitively but recently have been taking on more of a supporter/spectator role. However, I play competitive lawn bowling with the Rotary Park Lawn Bowling Club (Canada’s largest club!) and have attended some Provincial and other tournaments.
