Mike DaSilva

Director of Sales, San Diego
18 Years with Layfield

Q: Let’s start by getting to know you a bit better. Can you tell us about your journey with Layfield and what led you to your current role?
I was born and raised in Edmonton, AB, and after graduating from the University of Alberta, I embarked on a journey that took me abroad for a decade. Upon my return to Canada, I applied for a Customer Service position at Layfield Edmonton. Unfortunately, I was informed that the role I initially applied for had been filled. However, my international experience made me a suitable candidate for the Export Manager role that Layfield was soon opening. Shortly after Interviewing, I was hired for the position. This marked the beginning of an incredible 18-year journey with the company. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of living in San Diego and have held various job titles, each bringing new challenges and opportunities for growth. It’s been a remarkable adventure, and I’m grateful for the experiences and learning opportunities Layfield has provided me.

Q: What’s the most unique part about working here?
Layfield is a very well-managed company. We establish clear objectives, develop strategic plans to pursue these goals, and closely track our progress to maintain accountability. However, there’s also a strong sense of community that adds to the unique and supportive atmosphere.

Q: What do you love most about working in the geosynthetic industry?
Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a broad spectrum of projects, showcasing the incredible versatility and impact of geosynthetics. From the exhilarating world of surf parks to the critical field of secondary containment for hazardous chemicals, from harnessing biogas for sustainable energy solutions to managing stormwater effectively, I’ve had the privilege to contribute to innovative solutions that address various challenges. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the role of geosynthetics in shaping our world and have fueled my commitment to continuing my journey in this dynamic field.

Q: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work that people may not know about?
Exploring new countries and immersing myself in other cultures is a true passion of mine. Beyond my experiences living in Canada and the USA, I’ve been fortunate to call Mexico home for a decade and Spain for one year. These experiences have enriched my cultural awareness and expanded my perspective.
