Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority announced Layfield was awarded the Highlands 2 Reservoir

Company News

Layfield Geosynthetics (USA) is pleased to announce the recent award for the supply and installation of a new CSPE liner and floating cover system for the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority’s Highland 2 Reservoir.  The project includes demolition of the old liner and cover and fabrication and construction of a new 840,000 ft2 (78,000 m2) 60 mil CSPE liner and 840,000 ft2 (78,000 m2) 45 mil CSPE defined sump floating cover system.  Construction is scheduled to start in early 2022 as part of a two-year project.  The replacement of the Highland 2 Reservoir liner and cover is part of PWSA’s Water Reliability Plan – a series of once-in-a-generation projects to modernize its water distribution system and provide customers with more secure and reliable water services.  The PWSA Highlands 2 is a 126,000,000-gallon (477,000) liter reservoir.

CSPE (formerly Hypalon®) as a geomembrane was first developed in the mid-1970s.  Since its introduction, CSPE has proved to be an excellent material choice for long-term exposed applications for potable and wastewater storage.  CSPE is recognized for its outstanding UV properties, chemical resistance, and material flexibility.  CSPE is backed by an industry-leading 30-year weathering warranty.  It is one of the few materials in the geomembrane industry with a 45-year proven performance history that has truly passed the test of time.

Floating covers are designed to protect water by eliminating evaporation and preventing dirt and debris from contaminating the water source. Floating covers and reservoirs are the most economical way of storing and treating large volumes of drinking water.
